Ryan Newman only led 4 laps of the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 on Sunday at the Martinsville Speedway, but those were to only 4 laps that really counted because they were the final 4 laps of the race.

Newman took advantage of other drivers misfortunes late in the race and took the lead after the top three cars driven by Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer were knocked out of the race in the first attempt at an overtime finish.

Gordon was leading when Bowyer attempted to dive below him in Turn 1, Gordon’s #24 DuPont Chevrolet and Bowyer’s #15 5 hour Energy Toyota made contact and in the process collected the #48 Lowes Chevy driven by Johnson.

When the smoke cleared, Newman emerged in the lead and held it for the final two laps of the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 and finished ahead of second place A.J Allmendinger the rest of the top 5 was rounded out by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr.

The victory was Newman’s first of the season and his first at Martinsville Speedway and the 16th of Newman’s career. It was the third win of the year in six NASCAR events for Stewart-Haas Racing. After the race in victory lane Newman said “I felt like I wasn’t racing AJ on that restart, I felt like I was racing Dale Jr. behind me,” he continued “It was really important to me to not spin my tires and get a good start and race AJ and try to eliminate the No. 88 from the race for the win.”

The next stop on the Sprint Cup series is on Saturday April 14th just 3 hours south of us at the Texas Motor Speedway for the Samsung Mobile 500 with the pre-race starting at 6pm and the green flag drops at 7pm.
