Warner Bros. has done a little release date-shuffling, moving a few of their upcoming films around — most notably (and perhaps disappointingly) with The LEGO Movie 2, which was originally set to hit theaters in 2018 and will now arrive nine months later in 2019. The good news is that we still have two new LEGO Movie spinoffs coming in 2017, and Ben Affleck’s Live By Night will now hit theaters a bit earlier than expected.
J.J. Abrams’ first two Star Trek films weren’t entirely about spectacle — they certainly dealt with some #issues and bigger ideas, but they were still glossy, big budget blockbusters at the end of the day. Although co-writer Simon Pegg has said that Star Trek Beyond goes back to the series’ roots — more fun, more interesting concepts — his co-star Chris Pine has a slightly more cynical take on the franchise.
Summer is here and in case you’re blissfully unaware, it is gross outside. Good thing there are plenty of new movies to help you escape, whether it’s in a theater or at home. For the latter, July brings tons of options to enjoy from the comfort of your couch, including recent indie favorites like Green Room and Everybody Wants Some. If you’re looking for something a bit more…epic…then Zack Snyder’s Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman might be just your speed, and for the melodically inclined, next month has you covered with several biopics and the delightful musical Sing Street. Read on for our complete guide to July’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases.
When Christopher Nolan first revealed Heath Ledger’s Joker for The Dark Knight, fans were pretty annoyed with the drastic departure from the classic depictions of the character. Reactions to Jared Leto’s version of the character from Suicide Squad were twice as intense thanks to that gold grill and his collection of questionable tattoos, which mostly left fans feeling baffled. If you’re curious about what on earth inspired David Ayer’s new Joker, the director has offered some insight into his influences — most of which you can find on Instagram.
When Cate Blanchett was initially rumored for the Ocean’s Eleven spinoff, so too was the film’s working title: Ocean’s Ocho, which refers to the number of characters in the ensemble for Gary Ross’ female-fronted heist project. Ross himself has now officially confirmed the title for the film, which he’s been developing with original Ocean’s trilogy director Steven Soderbergh for some time now. And if you’re wondering just how similar Ross’ film will be to its predecessors, the answer is “pretty similar.”
Last year, Helen Mirren declared her love for the Fast & Furious franchise and, in particular, Vin Diesel, who was pretty convinced that Furious 7 could win the Oscar for Best Picture. It looks like Fast 8 will have a much better chance of securing a nomination (at the very least) as Mirren says she’s joined the cast of the upcoming sequel. And now we patiently wait as the greatest friendship of our time blossoms, inevitably yielding a series of delightful photos featuring Mirren and Diesel.
Yes, yes, our old pal Stay Puft the giant marshmallow man is back in these new TV spots for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, but the real delight here is watching Melissa McCarthy fire her proton pack at the crotch of a huge, sinister version of the iconic logo. “How do you like that?!” she shouts, and I think the only response is, "Very much, please continue."
Steven Spielberg has only gotten busier in recent years; the prolific director has been adding a fair amount of projects to his growing to-do list, including Indiana Jones 5, set to hit theaters in 2019. Harrison Ford will return to reprise his iconic role as the archaeological adventurer despite repeatedly denied rumors that Disney is looking to pass the torch to a new star. If you had any remaining doubts, Spielberg himself assures fans that Ford isn’t going anywhere — at least not in his Indy universe.
The summer movie season continues next month with new Ghostbusters, a big friendly giant, another Purge night and Star Trek Beyond, and that’s not even half of it. Those of you interested in something a little less blockbuster-y should definitely add Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice to your must-see list, along with the James Wan-produced horror flick Lights Out. For details on all of these movies and more, read on for our complete guide to July’s new movie releases.

Finding Dory hits theaters next week, but Pixar has already been hard at work planning another major sequel — and though it might not be one you’re too thrilled about, it’s definitely going to make plenty of fans happy. Cars 3 will hit theaters next summer, and we have some new plot details and a couple of pieces of concept art to get you all revved up for Pixar’s next animated adventure.
Last year, Mark Ruffalo hinted that Thor: Ragnarok might finally let Bruce Banner and the Hulk interact with each other on the big screen. It’s something that’s occasionally happened in the Marvel comics, but we’ve yet to see the MCU take a crack at it — likely because it requires a bit of clever thinking: not only do they need to cook up a cool way to present it to audiences, but it needs to come from an organic place. That place may very well be Ragnarok.
