Brett Young sang his heart out on Monday morning (April 23), performing his new ballad "Mercy" to Good Morning America. Young's emotional live vocals brought the song to life straight from Times Square.

The singer was casual in jeans and a black sweater, his band playing him in as he whispered:"If you gonna break my heart just break it / If you gonna take your shot then take it / If you made up your mind then make this fast / If you ever loved me, have mercy."

ABC's Robin Roberts was impressed by the rising country star's performance, and she shared some of his dress rehearsal on Instagram:

"Mercy" is the fourth single from Young's major label debut album, released last year. The singer has seen his first three singles top the country charts including "Sleep Without You," "In Case You Didn't Know" and "Like I Loved You." He's already hard at work on his sophomore album and promises that it will be "soulful and transparent."

Brett Young Talks About His Celebrity Crush and SO Much More

“I grew up listening to soul music and R&B music, and so there’ll be some production stuff where you can hear a little bit of a throwback thing," he says. In an interview with his record label, Big Machine Label Group, he adds that the songs he's thinking about recording will be similar to his 2017 self-titled album.

"The songs are similar. I’m going to write about my life every single time," Young explains. "I think that’s the kind of music I want to listen to is when I feel like people are being genuine as artists, and so I always want to be that and be transparent."
