When Cole Swindell first left Georgia for Nashville, he went to work for Luke Bryan. Bryan encouraged the young songwriter to work at his trade, eventually recording 9 of Swindell's songs, including the #1 hit "Roller Coaster". But there was always a song inside Cole that he had to write, and when his father passed away shortly after the younger Swindell signed with Warner Nashville, the song began to materialize.

The song is the title track from Swindell's second album You Should Be Here, which was written on Swindell's tour bus parked outside Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The song went to #1 in April, spending three weeks at the top of the chart. In celebration, Swindell sat down and talked about what the song means to him, and what it meant to him to perform it standing in the famous Grand Ole Opry circle.
