The Wednesday K-LAW Classic was the #1 country song 14 years ago - March 13th, 1999 - and was the key factor in turning the Dixie Chicks into a household name.

In the summer of 1995 session musician and producer Lloyd Maines suggested to sisters Martie and Emily Erwin, founders of the original Dixie Chicks band, that they invite his daughter Natalie to sing lead vocal on the song at a demo session in Lubbock, Texas. Natalie's work on that demo recording convinced the sisters that they needed to make a change in the group. So, original lead singer Laura Lynch was out, Natalie Maines was in.

'You Were Mine' was one of five singles released from the Chicks' Wide Open Spaces album, and would become their third #1.
