If nothing else, the events of 2016 have gone to show us just how wrong presumptions can be, whether potentially hilarious presidential bids, or century-long baseball curses. Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver learned both the hard way, recalling past Daily Show clips in which he’d made catastrophically bad taunts in hindsight.

Having served as one of Trump’s most outspoken late-night critics, Oliver devoted a regretful Last Week Tonight segment to call out some of his own past bits, including a 2013 Daily Show clip in which he’d encouraged Trump to run in the first place. “I will personally write you a campaign check now, on behalf of this country, which does not want you to be president but which badly wants you to run,” said the host, then filling in for Jon Stewart.

As if that weren’t enough, Oliver dipped back even further through the annals of time to his tenure as a Daily Show correspondent, in which he’d vehemently denied the Cubs would ever win the World Series. Oh, how young we all were.

You can watch the clip above, and as Oliver put it, “if you are thinking you don’t have to show up on Tuesday because there is no way the impossible could happen, take it from somebody who has learned from painful experience: You are wrong about that.”
