Kacey Musgraves Gets Tropical, Tearful at ‘CMA Country Christmas’ 2016 [WATCH]
Kacey Musgraves transported CMA Country Christmas viewers to an island paradise on Monday night (Nov. 28) -- but she also added a dose of sadness to the evening. The country star performed twice during the annual TV special, treating the audience to the classic “Mele Kalikimaka," as well as to an original holiday song, "Christmas Makes Me Cry."
"Mele Kalikimaka" was Musgraves' first performance of the night; the stage was bathed in orange light and set with a beach backdrop, while Musgraves herself performed barefoot and while wearing a silver, glittering hula skirt. A steel guitar solo gave the Christmas tune a bit of country flair, while the Quebe Sisters added a retro feel to the second verse of the song, which was written in 1949 by Robert Alex Anderson and popularized by Bing Crosby in 1950. Later in the evening, Musgraves stood on a blue-lit, darkened stage to sing "Christmas Makes Me Cry," which she wrote for her recently released holiday album, A Very Kacey Christmas. Press play below to watch.
“I knew I wanted to write a depressing, sad Christmas song,” Musgraves recently told The Boot, adding that "Christmas Makes Me Cry" has just as much universal appeal as the fun ones: “There is an element of that to the holidays that no one I feel like wants to talk about. It can be a sad time for a lot of people, and I wanted to include that sentiment.”
A Very Kacey Christmas is currently available on Amazon and iTunes. To celebrate its release, Musgraves has embared on her first-ever Christmas tour; the A Very Kacey Christmas Tour played Nashville on Monday night and is scheduled to wrap up right before Christmas.
