It’s official: Katie Couric is leaving ‘CBS Evening News.’

The veteran news anchor confirmed the news Tuesday in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, saying, “I have decided to step down from the ‘CBS Evening News.’ I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I’ve done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning. In making the decision to move on, I know the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.”

As for what the future holds for the 54-year-old anchor, Couric told PEOPLE that she is “looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling,” adding that specific details are “still being discussed.”

Earlier reports have suggested that Couric may launch a syndicated talk show next year.

CBS has yet to set an official exit date for Couric. Her contract with the network ends on June 4.

In the meantime, though unconfirmed, it has been widely reported that ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Scott Pelley will replace Couric as anchor of ‘CBS Evening News.’ According to MSNBC, CBS is expected to make the announcement as early as next week.

Couric began her post at ‘CBS Evening News’ in 2006. Among her many highlights include her now-famous interview with former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, which you can relive in the video below.
