Something's funny in Altus, and its not a comedy show. Actually, it's quite serious. Altus police are warning residents and merchants to watch out for counterfeit currency that has been found in the area.

The Altus Police Department is currently investigating several phony $20 and $100 bills that were passed at local businesses last week. While authorities report that the bills collected last week were taken in by business, it says also that residents should be cautious of any bill that doesn't quite "feel" or look right. The bills that were used as illegal tender are identifiable by the texture of the bills, black lines that appear near the top right of the bills, and 'chinese characters' that have been added to the bills.

If you take in one of these counterfeit bills, please call the Altus Police Department at 580 481-2296.
