Gene Autry rides in the Santa Claus Lane parade in Hollywood, as do Roy Rogers, Jack Benny and Red Skelton. When Autry hears children shout, "Here comes Santa Claus," he's inspired to write "Here Comes Santa Claus (Down Santa Claus Lane)."
Autry recorded the original, and most famous version in 1947, with it climbing to #5 on the country and #9 on the pop charts. He recorded the song in 1953 and again in 1957. The song has also been recorded by by Elvis Presley, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters, Ray Conniff Singers, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans, Willie Nelson, The Wiggles, Billy Idol, Bob Dylan, Mariah Carey, Chicago.
