Top 5 Things To Do In SW Oklahoma For Memorial Day Weekend
1.) Ft. Sill National Cemetery Memorial Day Program
2648 NE Jake Dunn Rd, Elgin
Let’s not forget the reason for Memorial Day! Sure, it’s the unofficial kick-off to summer, filled with backyard barbecues and time spent at the lake. But the real reason we have Memorial Day – this federal holiday formerly known as Decoration Day – is to commemorate U. S. soldiers who have died while in the military service. The Ft. Sill National Cemetery Memorial Day Program is a great way to honor those military members who have served our country. The program starts Monday (Memorial Day) at 10am and is sponsored by the Comanche County Veterans Council. Call 918) 478-2334 for more info.
2.) MAYOR’S RED DIRT BALL
Medicine Park, OK
Beautiful Medicine Park will be the setting for this 3-day music event. There will be 2 stages of live music right in the heart of Medicine Park from 8 to 11:30pm Friday night, and 1pm to 12:30am Saturday & Sunday. The best part? It’s absolutely FREE! You can find all the info on Medicine Park’s website, including the complete schedule of performers.
3.) THE LAKE
Several choices in the area.
Area lakes are sure to be packed with folks celebrating the unofficial start to summer. Whether you’re boating, camping, swimming or fishing, you will likely have a lot of company this weekend. Have fun – and be safe!
4.) CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM
This all-weekend celebration has it all – music, food, a motorcycle freedom run, a silent auction – even a wine tasting! All to help celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the opening of the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute in Hobart. Aaron Tippin will be there to headline the Sunday concert, which is free to active duty and retired military. Just make sure you have your military ID with you. You can call 580) 726-5900 or check the Celebration of Freedom website for schedule info.
5.) STAYCATION – BACKYARD BARBECUE
Any backyard with a decent grill
No matter what you have planned during the long holiday weekend, I bet you can find time to throw something on the grill. Burgers, brats, chicken, ribs, steaks – whatever it is, it always seems to taste better comin’ off the grill. Happy grilling!
