With just a little under a month to go until the planned Live Events, the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma have made the difficult decision to forego the Live Events: Spirit Walk, and Kids Marathon and instead take these events virtual as well.

You may remember that last year, the Spirit of Survival first did events virtually because of the COVID 19 Pandemic, and had originally planned to do the same this year.  As the year began it looked like the effects of COVID were diminishing, and the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma began to make plans to have the two Sunday afternoon events go live.  I mean, who can resist kids and bubbles with the bubble run at the end of the kids marathon!

Organizers made the tough decision for two reasons. First, the thousands of kids who finish their individual marathons all at once at the Live event, and second, Cancer Survivors making the Spirit Walk and their suppressed immune system.  It just wasn't a risk they were willing to take.

All details of all Walk, Run and Bike events are available at spiritofsurvival.com.

I think more than worrying about whether the events are live or virtual, the Cancer Centers are looking at one thing, and one thing only.  The reason they take on this work in the first place.  The patients of Southwest Oklahoma.  Those who are battling Cancer and those who have finished a treatment protocol.  Those who have to choose between groceries and treatment.  Every dollar received from the Spirit of Survival goes to benefit those Cancer patients.  It would do us all good the remember that.
