Despite Leaking Online, the ‘Avengers 2′ Trailer Broke All Kinds of Records
Every few months, someone on the internet loudly declares that we're probably nearing the end of the superhero movie as a popular genre. And then, every few months, another trailer arrives that proves that we're going to be watching movies starring people wearing capes and tights for a long time yet. The new trailer for 'Avengers 2' lit the internet on fire, as you'd expect from the sequel to one of the most popular blockbusters in recent years. In fact, if success can be measured in trailer views, then Marvel and Disney can already call this one a big winner.
In an article over at EW, Disney revealed that the trailer for the second Marvel team-up movie broke their all-time record with 34.3 million times within the first 24 hours of its release, with 26.2 million of those views coming from the company's main YouTube channel. To put that in perspective, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' held the previous 2014 trailer record with 36.4 million views in one week. 'Avengers 2' almost beat that in one day.
As compared with previous Marvel films, the first 'Iron Man 3' trailer was watched 23.14 million times in its first day and 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' 23.5 million times. To go back even further, the first 'Avengers' movie was watched 20.4 million times in 24 hours.
Everyone knows that 'Avengers 2' is going to be the movie to beat at next summer's box office, but this is the kind of cultural saturation and excitement that you really can't buy. This is what happens when you create something that audiences genuinely love and can't wait to go see again and again. It will be tough to top the box office of the first film, but this is an early indication that Marvel may have a shot at topping their biggest movie. Hey, why start doubting them now?
'Avengers 2' opens on May 1, 2015. Everyone you know is going to see it.
