Chet Atkins Leads No Smoking Day – Today In Country Music History [VIDEO]
November 20, 1986
Ex-smoker Chet Atkins is honorary chairman of the sixth annual Great American Smokeout, asking nicotine addicts to lay off their cigarettes for one day.
The event, an annual event of the American Cancer Society, encourages Americans, of whom 43.8 million smoke to stop tobacco smoking. The event challenges people to stop smoking cigarettes for 24 hours, hoping their decision not to smoke will last forever.
About 70% of the 47 million cigarette smokers in the U.S. would like to quit the habit and 42.7% have made quit attempts. Unfortunately, the average quit attempt lasts just eight days and only five percent of smokers will manage to quit in a given year.

Faith Hill’s album Cry was certified double platinum. The album featured the singles Cry (#12), When The Lights Go Down and One (#12) and has since been certified 4x platinum by the RIAA.
