Dan + Shay Make History With Chart-Topping Self-Titled Album
Dan + Shay know how to make an impression.
The duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney are celebrating a career milestone after becoming the first duo or group in a decade to simultaneously top both the Billboard Top Country Albums and Country Airplay charts. Dan + Shay sits on the former list, and “Tequila" is hanging strong on the latter.
The lead single made a rapid climb in the months leading up to the album's June 22 release and has achieved more than 150 million streams to date. Dan + Shay also scored the highest debut-week stream of any new release in the genre so far in 2018 with 29 million streams.
This isn't the first time the duo has made history with their music — in 2014, they earned the designation of being the only new duo in Soundscan history to debut at the top of the Country Albums chart when their album Where It All Began was released.
Smyers shares with Taste of Country that he and Mooney set the bar high for themselves when making the self-titled project, and feel as though they've discovered who they are as artists. "We've put out these two records and had a certain amount of success with those, and it definitely put a lot more pressure on us. When we were writing and in the studio, it's like, ‘Is this idea better than everything we've ever put out to this day?' and if it wasn't, let's keep digging," he says.
The duo has a busy touring schedule ahead, opening for Rascal Flatts on the 2018 Back to Us Tour before hopping over to Chris Young's expanded 2018 Losing Sleep World Tour that kicks off Oct. 25.
