David Lee Murphy's massive hit “Dust on the Bottle” will turn 25 years old in 2020. And in all his years in country music, the acclaimed singer-songwriter has heard plenty of other artist cover the addictive song, including some of country music's biggest current vocal powerhouses.

"It's a great feeling to hear these guys do it in their live show," Murphy tells Taste of Country in a recent backstage interview. "I was talking to Luke Combs, and he was talking about how he has done it in his show, which is really cool."

Kip Moore is another artist who has given the song a whirl. Murphy calls him "a great guy." "I’ve known him since before he had his record deal," the legend adds of Moore. "We are really happy for Kip and the success he is having."

Indeed, Murphy finds himself encouraged by a number of the future stars of country music – including, also, Chris Janson.

"Chris Janson and I have been writing a lot together lately," says Murphy, who will spend a majority of his summer out with Kenny Chesney on his 2019 Songs for the Saints Tour. "I’ve been friends with him since he was 24 or 25 and have always thought that he has had a huge amount of potential. I’m enjoying watching him and his success."

Of course, at the same time, these young guns also make the one-time hitmaker chuckle a bit.

"I walked into a writing session the other day, and I had my old Apple MacBook, and it was like I was going old school," Murphy recalls with a laugh. "These guys are always telling me that they want to write some '90s s--t, and I always go, 'What is that?'"
