I’ll be honest: I didn’t get the pun in the title of The Fate of the Furious until just now, when I got my eyes on the film’s latest poster. Take a look at it and see if you get it. (Maybe you got it already. If you did, sit quietly and give the rest a moment to figure it out.)

Did you spot it? Look at the top. F8, as in Fast and Furious 8. Now sound it out: “f-eight” becomes “fate.” Hence The Fate of the Furious.

Maybe I’m just a dummy and everyone else already realized this (a possibility I acknowledge is very possible), but still: This is brilliant. But then I expect nothing less from the Furious movies, the most consistently enjoyable mega-budget action franchise for quite a few years now. Here’s the official plot synopsis for the newest entry, the first conceived after the death of series co-star Paul Walker:

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life.  But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

The poster also puts Vin Diesel’s Dom in the “F” while the rest of the cast, including Dwayne Johnson, are all in the “8,” to represent the way our beloved family has been torn asunder. Another very nice touch. The Fate and the Furious opens in theaters on April 14.
