Historic WWII Planes Soar Over Bomber Bowl During Frederick High School Game
Football is a deeply-rooted sport in Oklahoma. Just about every little league, middle school, high school, and collegiate teams have their own traditions. Most traditions, like signing the school's alma matter at the end of a game, might be similar to others, while some are unique to the town.
When I was growing up in Frederick and eventually cheering for our high school football team, I didn't realize how singular it was to have World War II planes fly over the stadium on a Friday night home game.
Frederick WWII Airborne Demonstration Team
Recently, the Frederick Quarterback and All Sports Club Club shared a video on Facebook showing a WWII plane flying over Bomber Bowl, the football stadium in Frederick. The plane was manned by members of the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team, which runs the old WWII hangar in Frederick and hosts classes year round for those who want to be part of the team or experience a moment in history.

The WWII planes don't fly over the stadium for every home football game. But there is a smaller one that accompanies the football team that's modeled after the planes. The Spirt of FHS is a mini motorized plane that leads the charge when the football players enter the field through a fan-filled spirit line.
As a cheerleader, I would have to run from this little plane and the football players to the safety of the sidelines to begin performing our dance to the fight song. It was the best thrill and rush before a home game.
The connection to the hangar is also carried through the school's mascot, the Bombers.
Frederick Open Hangar Day
Frederick residents and people from all over Oklahoma and north Texas have another unique opportunity to experience in Frederick during the demonstration's team annul Open Hangar Day. This year's event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the hangar in Frederick.
During Open Hangar Day, visitors can tour the historic WWII hangar as well as the planes. Then, if weather permitting, the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team will perform a live demonstration.
Open Hangar Day is free and open to the public. However, the team is accepting new toy donations for Toys for Tots. More information about Open Hangar Day in Frederick, can be found on the demonstration team's official Facebook page.
