Before the pedestrian bridge was constructed, pedestrians would have to walk along a small, makeshift sidewalk along the Gore Boulevard bridge that crossed I-44. This was extremely dangerous to pedestrians and drivers as there was hardly any distance between the two. Now pedestrian have their own bridge to walk across I-44.
According to ODOT, the pedestrian bridge was a collaboration between the City of Lawton and ODOT. The bridge will improve safety in the area by separating pedestrians and bicyclists from vehicles. The bridge has additional safety features, including new pedestrian sidewalks and pedestrian push buttons at street crossings.
The City of Lawton is also working on the bridge on Cache Road.
Residents in Lawton will still experiencing lane closures due to bridge work as the construction project on the Cache Road bridge is still underway. According to a recent Facebook post from the City of Lawton, the construction on the Cache Road bridge is to strengthen the two bridges and extend the life of the bridges for another 20 to 30 years. Construction is expected to be complete by July of this year.
