How Kids In Lawton Can Enjoy Free Meals This Summer
School may be out, but Lawton Public Schools won't stop feeding kids! The district's annual Summer Feeding Program kicked off on May 26 with one site opening, and the rest of the sites are set to start serving food on Monday, June 1.
Various feeding sites will open throughout Lawton this summer offering students free breakfast and lunch. Some of the sites will offer one or both meals. Most of the sites will only be open Monday through Thursday but some sites will also be open on Fridays.
Central Middle School was the first LPS summer feeding site to open.
The first site to open for the summer feeding program was Central Middle School, and it opened on Tuesday, May 26. Located at 1201 NW Fort Sill Boulevard, the school will serve breakfast and lunch weekly from Monday through Friday this summer.
On Monday, June 1, more sites across Lawton will open for the LPS Summer Feeding Program. According to a press release, some of the sites in Lawton will allow kids to eat their meals inside, while others, like local parks, will distribute sack lunches outside.
The program is overseen by Daniel Ghrayyeb, director of child nutrition at LPS, and stated in a press release that the purpose of the program is to ensure that children, even if they're not LPS students, have at least one good meal a day.
"It's always multi-faceted," Ghrayyeb said, explaining the programs schedule and locations to meet the maximum number of kids. "We always want to have food available for all kids, not necessarily LPS students, but any youth up to age 18 and any student enrolled in LPS (some LPS students are older than 18)."
More summer feeding program locations will open across Lawton on Monday, June 1.
Central Middle School is already serving breakfast and lunch to students for the summer, and more summer feeding sites are set to open across Lawton on Monday, June 1.
See the full list of summer feeding sites offered by LPS below. All sites will be serving through July 24 unless noted otherwise. The program will not serve food at any of the sites on June 19 and July 3.
