Loretta Lynn on Donald Trump Protests: ‘March If You Want to, But Do It With Class’
In early 2016, Loretta Lynn expressed her support for Donald Trump's bid for president: "[He's] the only one who’s going to turn this country around," the country icon said at the time. Now, in a new interview, Lynn is sharing more of her thoughts about President Trump, and the recent protests against his presidency and recently enacted legislation.
"I think they ought to leave him alone and let him do his job. That's what I think," Lynn tells Rolling Stone. "He's up there and he's the president. They need to help him, not hinder him. Everybody ought to pitch in and help, do everything they can to help the man."
On Jan. 21, the day after Trump's inauguration, millions of Americans, and supporters around the world, rallied and marched in protest of his presidency; these Women's Marches drew, per Reuters estimates, nearly 5 million people overall. While Lynn -- whose biggest hits include the taboo-for-their-time "Rated X," "Don't Come Home a'Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)" and "The Pill" -- admits that she thinks "a march is fine," she adds that "[t]hey should have done it with more class."
"I thought that Madonna and Ashley Judd ... they got a little too far out," Lynn explains. "For God's sake, march if you want to, but do it with class."
Country's Most Political Artists
Lynn, who will turn 85 in April, released a new album, Full Circle, in 2016; the project earned her a career-high chart debut and a nomination at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The singer will celebrate her birthday with two shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in mid-April and be the subject of a Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit later this year ... but don't expect to see her at Sunday's (Feb. 12) Grammys ceremony.
"I flew all I'm gonna fly," Lynn says. "The last time they called me and told me they had me booked all over Europe, I said, 'I hope you all have a good time, 'cause I ain't goin' nowhere if I have to fly.'"
