Local Bakery Offering Curated Pies for ‘Waitress’ Production In Oklahoma City

Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma will bring "Waitress," the Tony nominated musical, to Oklahoma City, and they're partnering with Pie Junkie to offer curated pies based on the musical. Pies can be ordered before each showing and will be delivered to Lyric Theatre at intermission.

According to Lyric Theatre's website, "Waitress" is a Broadway pop musical hit that features a score by six time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles. The musical is based on the 2007 film by the same name. It's the story of Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, from a small town and stuck in an abusive marriage. She finds out that she's pregnant and learns of a baking competition in a near by town that could be her recipe for escape.

"Waitress" is set to open at Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City on Feb. 12 and will run through March 2. The production will be done in collaboration with award-winning Oklahoma City bakery Pie Junkie, which is located in the city's Plaza District near Lyric Theatre.

Pie Junkie will offer a Pie Junkie x "Waitress" slice menu in collaboration with Lyric Theatre. Pie Junkie will also offer original themed flavors. Attendees of the musical will be able to order a slice of pie to be delivered during the show's intermission. Pie Junkie will also be celebrating the production by offering "Waitress" themed flavors in the shop during Lyric Theatre's three week run of the musical.

Fun baking facts about 'Waitress.'

"Waitress" opened on Broadway in 2016 and closed in 2020. Before the musical had its Broadway debut, the cast worked with local Manhattan bakers to make sure the baking scenes were realistic. And based on posts from social media, it looks like Lyric Theatre has been doing the same thing with Pie Junkie in preparation for the production.

And when "Waitress" opened on Broadway, a pie was being warmed in a convection oven in the entryway of the theater to fully immerse the audiences. And slices of pie were sold in the theater's lobby. With Lyric Theatre's collaboration with Pie Junkie, it looks like Oklahoma City audiences will have a similar "Waitress" Broadway experience.
