Kenny Chesney Using Music to Heal the Virgin Islands After Hurricane Irma
Kenny Chesney is giving back to those impacted by Hurricane Irma in the best way he knows how: through music.
The country superstar revealed in two Instagram posts on Monday (Sept. 11) that he's in the studio "recording music to help the Virgin Islands." Chesney encourages fans to donate to his Love for Love City Foundation in the meantime, and he has also set up a special page on his official website selling specific merchandise that will directly benefit the foundation.
Chesney's home on the island of St. Thomas was destroyed when Hurricane Irma — a Category 5 storm at the time — hit St. John on Saturday (Sept. 9). He set up the Love for Love City Foundation in its aftermath to raise money for those who live on the island full time who were impacted by the devastating storm.
Songs Inspired by World Tragedy
The singer says 200MPH winds whipped through his island home while friends were staying there, seeking shelter. The New York Times reports that the island suffered excessive damage to 80 percent of its structures.
“That place and the people mean so much more to me than my house,” he tells HLN's Robin Meade. “I think we’re all going to come together and we’re going to do so much to rebuild. The people’s souls down there, they’re hurting.” Chesney reached out to fans on Instagram in the storm's wake, comparing it to a war zone and described the scene as "total devastation."
