Sam Hunt’s New Single, ‘Kinfolks,’ Is a Down-Home Modern Love Song [Listen]
The wait is finally over for Sam Hunt fans! His new single, "Kinfolks," is here, and it's well worth the long wait.
"Kinfolks" is a traditional-themed love song about wanting a lover to meet the family and see the places and faces most important to you. It centers around the timeless theme of bringing someone new back home, but with a very modern twist.
"I want to introduce you to my kinfolks / To my old friends / To the house in the pines where the road ends / Take you to my hometown / Where I grew up / Where I thought I knew it all before I knew what love was / Gave up on it but honey, you got my hopes up / And I'm thinking that I want to introduce you to my kinfolks," Hunt sings in the chorus.
The track is the kind of music amalgam that is Hunt's specialty, with heavy-hitting drums, a vocal treated in a wash of echo and electric guitar lines carrying part of the melody, intermingled with acoustic guitars and a hint of banjo. The progressive musical track features the kind of spoken-work, not-quite-rapping verses Hunt is best known for, but he sings the choruses. Hunt teamed with Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers and Josh Osborne to write the new single.
“When I think of ‘kinfolks,’ when I think of that phrase, I think of my family, but also I think of my people back home – beyond family," Hunt says in a press release. "It’s my buddies who’ve been a part of my story from the beginning. I’ve made a lot of new friends and met a lot of new people who are important to me since I’ve moved away, but that core group is still my core group. It’s like that old saying, ‘you can’t make old friends.’”
The release of "Kinfolks" marks Hunt's first new music since he dropped "Downtown's Dead" in 2018. That was preceded by a massive hit single in "Body Like a Back Road" in 2017, but it's been five years since Hunt shot to fame with the release of his debut album, Montevallo.
Did You Know? Hunt has been teasing new music, most recently debuting a new song titled "Sinning With You" at a show in Calgary, Alberta, in September.
Sam Hunt's "Kinfolks" Lyrics:
I saw you going by, I had to say hello / And I don't mean to pry, but girl I gotta know / What is your name? How come I ain't seen you around before? / You know I ain't never had a type, having a type takes two / But I know what I like, and you're the only one of you / You're something else, and I know we just met, but
Chorus:
I want to introduce you to my kinfolks / To my old friends / To the house in the pines where the road ends / Take you to my hometown / Where I grew up / Where I thought I knew it all before I knew what love was / Gave up on it but honey, you got my hopes up / And I'm thinking that I want to introduce you to my kinfolks
I wanna take you home, I'd just take you home tonight / Get Joanie on the phone, she'll leave us on a light / I wanna see the way you look up under all those stars / You're gonna be the talk, word's gonna get around / They'll tell you how they thought I'd never settle down / Out on the porch / Ain't it funny the way things change?
Repeat Chorus
