Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Skyscraper’ Gets a New Costar and Synopsis
Does anyone else think that Dwayne Johnson’s blockbuster movies are starting to blur together a little bit? Given that Johnson tends to play variations of the same character — the tough-as-nails and compassionate ex-military whatever — while things blow up around him, what matters most is the type of thing that’s blowing up. Sometimes they’re cars (The Fate of the Furious), sometimes parts of California (San Andreas), and sometimes monsters (Rampage). Don’t worry, though, because Johnson will really show off his range with his next film: this time, it’s a building that blows up. Oscar, please!
Seriously, though, Johnson’s Skyscraper has sounded like a whole bunch of fun since it was first announced earlier this year, and now we’ve gotten a few more bits of pertinent information about the film. As noted by Deadline (via /Film), Neve Campbell has recently joined the cast of Skyscraper to play opposite Johnson. Campbell has mostly been working in television for the past five years — with a few smaller film credits along the way — so this will mark a return to crowd-pleasing summer movies for the former Scream star.
The casting announcement also came with an official synopsis, courtesy of Deadline:
Johnson stars as a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and war veteran who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, he must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who are trapped inside the building above the fire line.
A man on the run after being falsely accused of a crime? If this is Johnson’s take on The Fugitive, only with more skyscraper explosions, count me in. Hollywood is never too busy for the occasional potboiler centered around action and cases of mistaken identity. Even if it does confuse me about Johnson’s filmography that much more.
