Stroke Victim Awaiting Rescue in South Pole [VIDEO]

Imagine if you had a medical emergency in a vast frozen wasteland, but adequate care simply wasn’t available.

That’s exactly what happened to 58-year-old Renee-Nicole Douceur, a worker at the Amundsen-Scott research station in the South Pole, when she suffered a stroke in late August, reported Today.

Since then, Douceur’s vision has deteriorated and she has had trouble solving simple math equations. The station’s doctors determined that Douceur should be removed from the base as soon as possible. But the organization which runs the facility has so far refused to send a plane to her rescue, deeming her condition not life-threatening and citing poor weather conditions.

If weather holds out, Douceur could be rescued by a cargo flight on Oct. 17. Watch her ongoing story below.
