Sturgill Simpson's A Sailor’s Guide to Earth won the 2017 Grammy Awards Best Country Album trophy on Sunday (Feb. 12). The honor was handed out during the Premiere Ceremony, which streamed online before the televised awards show.

A Sailor’s Guide to Earth was written for Simpson's son, and it was written somewhat as a record of advice. When he was nominated for this award, Simpson said that he realized he had his son to thank for his two Grammy nods, and in his acceptance speech for the trophy, Simpson recalled the huge part his family played in the creation of A Sailor's Guide to Earth.

"So, like, six years ago, I was in Utah working on a railroad, writing songs at night ... about two and a half years ago, our first son was born ...," Simpson said from stage, "and if it hadn't been for [my wife and son], I wouldn't have written this record."

He added wittily, "And I guess the revolution will not be televised."

Other deserving nominees for Best Country Album in 2017 included Big Day in a Small Town from Brandy ClarkLoretta Lynn‘s Full Circle;  Maren Morris and her debut disc Hero; and Keith Urban‘s RipcordSimpson now has a total of three Grammys nods and one piece of hardware to his name.
