I admire women who have dreams of going into business, then follow that dream and just do it!

I've thought of what I would do when I'm no longer doing the radio gig, but for the life of me, I can't just decide whether or not I could be successful in my dream.  I need a bunch of answers before I step off into the unknown and follow those dreams.

Enter SW Oklahoma's Business Summit.  The summit returns this September 15th at the Great Plains Technology Center.

From 8 am to 3 pm, participants will have the opportunity to hear from veteran guest speakers on many topics that pertain to starting and maintaining their own businesses. In addition, the event will feature a BAIL Team, with professionals in banking, accounting, insurance, and law to assist with business resources as well as vendor booths of woman-owned businesses and networking opportunities.

Lynn Null, Small Business Management Coordinator at Great Plains Technology Center is excited for the return of this event after the COVID-19 Pandemic forced the postponement of the event for more than a year.

"It's been more than two years since we hosted the last Summit, and at that time, prior to the pandemic within a very environment.  After receiving an influx of requests and positive feedback from the previous, we decided to bring this event back to our communities and benefit those who truly need the resources."

Marla Herndon, Event co-chair and Coordinator of REI Women’s Business Center, added to these sentiments.

"Living in a post-pandemic world as a business owner or aspiring entrepreneur has its own set of unique challenges.”

By providing valuable resources and high-caliber speakers like Maria Elena Duron from Google to educate other women, it creates the space for more successfully launched businesses.

Tickets are now on sale for $50 and include breakfast & lunch. Tickets can be purchased at www.reiwbc.org/swoksummit. For more information, please contact Marla Herndon at mherndon@reiok.org or Brandi Sims at brandi@brandincpr.com.

Lawton's Worst Roads As Voted By You

Roads have always been a hot topic in Lawton. The local government always promises to fix them when elections are at stake, but the improvements never come. It's more of the same crumbling roads and bandaid patches due to what the city describes as "too little funding," even though we continually vote for bonds to satisfy these issues.

Here are the worst commonly used roads in Lawton as voted by you.

Lake Altus-Lugert and SWOK's Underwater Ghost Town

Like most rare things, conditions have to be just right to see one of Oklahoma's hidden gems. In years of good and average rainfall, the lost town of Lugert stays buried beneath the waves... but in dry years, especially those stricken by drought, you can walk around this pre-statehood townsite while enjoying one of Oklahoma's prettiest areas, Quartz Mountain State Park.
