October 21, 1967
The Music City News presents its first annual awards at Ernest Tubb's Record Shop. Merle Haggard wins Favorite Male Artist, and Loretta Lynn wins Favorite Female Artist.
The annual award show continued until 1990 when it merged with The Nashville Network's fan voted award show, the Viewers Choice Awards to become the TNN/Music City News Country Awards. In 2001, the name was changed to TNN/CMT Country Weekly Music Awards. Finally in 2005 it became the CMT Music Awards.
2012
Garth Brooks, Connie Smith and session keyboard player Hargus "Pig" Robbins officially join the Country Music Hall of Fame during a medallion ceremony in Nashville
2004
Toby Keith receives his second quadruple-platinum album, for Shock'n Y'all. The album featured three #1 singles: "I Love This Bar", "American Soldier" and "Whiskey Girl".
1999
The Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spacesalbum reaches 8 million in shipments. The album featured 5 single releases: "I Can Love You Better" (#7), "Wide Open Spaces" (#1), "There's Your Trouble" (#1), "You Were Mine" (#1) and "Tonight the Heartache's on Me" (#6).
The album has been since been certified Diamond by the RIAA signifying over 10 million copies sold.
1987
Exactly six months after its release, Dwight Yoakam's "Hillbilly Deluxe" is recognized with a gold album. The album contained the singles "Little Ways", "Please, Please Baby", "Always Late With Your Kisses" and "Little Sister"
