‘The Voice': Jared Herzog Delivers Dan + Shay Tune, Makes Surprising Choice
The Voice Season 17 continued with part five of the blind auditions on Monday (Oct. 7)—allowing returning coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend, as well as returning alum Gwen Stefani, to take cracks at their initial team builds. Shelton and Stefani are, of course, well-known as a real-life couple, and are keeping things bubbly with playful competition.
Jared Herzog, a 21-year-old from Niceville, Fla., auditioned with Dan + Shay's "Speechless," which he explained was a Valentine's gift to his girlfriend.
Shelton, Stefani and—surprisingly—Legend all hit their buttons. Upon the end of the performance, Legend put forth an unexpected plea.
"My name is John Legend, I'm from Springfield, Ohio, and I like long walks on the beach," he joked "I won The Voice last season. I'm a Capricorn."
"You take the whole audience on a journey," he continued. "I would love to work with you and help you build that story even more."
Stefani gamely noted, "I'm a Libra. A lot of balance," and raved a bit about his delivery of the song. Shelton rudely broke in with "Is she done yet?"
He continued with, "When I heard you were doing Dan + Shay, I was like, 'Oh maybe he's country.' I don't care either way. I got to hit my button."
"I feel like the best solution for that would be to just pick someone that's more a neutral party, and this way, their relationship stays intact," joked Legend.
"That was clever, but you know, you pick me, you get Blake," advised Stefani.
"You pick me, you get Chrissy," Legend shot back, referring to his wife, Chrissy Teigen. He added that Teigen would cook him dinner, and that she's a mighty fine cook.
This apparently won over the young singer, who admitted he'd wanted to work with Legend for a long time and made the surprising choice to go over to Team Legend.
