Everyone likes vacation, and yet Americans prove themselves to be the workaholics they’re rumored to be by not using all of the vacation time allotted to them by employers.

According to the recent American Travel Behavior Survey conducted by Hotwire.com, the average American employee has over a week’s worth of paid vacation days left unused at the end of each year. Six days and 96 minutes, to be exact.

The survey was conducted online and included more than 2,000 adults, 18 years of age and older. Among those surveyed, 843 said that they receive paid vacation days from their primary employers.

Clem Bason, president of Hotwire Group, believes people think that travel is too expensive at the end of the year, so they leave the vacation days unused. “What many people don’t know is that the best time to score a deal is during the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when overall travel demand is at its lowest,” he said. Bason also said that this is the time of year that hotels, airlines and car rental companies publish many discounts for leisure travelers because business travel is nearly non-existent.

This means that now is the time to use up those days, because the deals are hot and, really, no one ever wishes they had just one more day at work.
