Today's spotlight falls on a group, founded by its namesake, who was a thesis away from his Master's degree while attending Texas Tech University, who then decided to put his education on hold and formed the band with three fraternity brothers.

The Josh Abbott Band was formed in 2006 in Lubbock, TX, when Josh Abbott and his brothers from Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Austin Davis, Neel Huey and Drew Hurt came together and and started playing around the Tech campus. in 2007 they recorded a demo and by 2008 they were touring the state regularly. Huey & Hurt dropped out of the group when the touring began and were replaced by Preston Wait and Eddie Villanueva.

In 2009 the band recorded its first album, Scapegoat, soon after adding to the group by welcoming James Hertless and Caleb Keeter, setting the band's line-up as it still is today. The album was a minor Texas hit, and led to a second, 2010's She's Like Texas, which garnered the group its first chart recognition, peaking at #28 on the Country Albums chart. Once again the album was a critical success, and was popular in the groups home state of Texas, but produced only one single that saw significant airplay, a duet with Kacey Musgraves, "Oh, Tonight", which peaked at #44 on the Billboard Hot Country chart.

2012's Small Town Family Dream was a similar story, scoring a lot of success in the band's home state, while nationally peaking at #5 on the Country Albums chart, with only one of its four singles hitting the charts; "Touch", the second single from the album stalled at #41 on its chart climb. In September of 2014, the group released an EP, Tuesday Night, which hit #12 on the Country Album Chart and feature the single "Hangin' Around", which made it to #44 on the charts.

In November of 2015 the Josh Abbott Band released their fifth album, Front Row Seat, a concept album about Abbott's divorce, which so far has peaked at #6 on the album chart; the first single from the album, "Amnesia" peaked at #45. The second single from the album features a young blue grass singer from Kentucky (where all good blue grass comes from), who has a voice as big as the Bluegrass State itself. Carly Pearce is a voice from country's past, with a future as bright as the midday sun.
