Today, the Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday spotlight shines on a singer and songwriter from Samson, Alabama, now living in Geneva, AL.

At the young age of five, Shane Owens' parents gave him a set of drums, and at age six he started singing in the church choir. The choir had members of all ages, but Shane's powerful voice drew most of the attention, especially on his favorite hymns, like "I'll Fly Away".

Country music was big part of Shane's childhood. Artists like Don Williams, Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs were often heard in the Owen's house, while other artists like George Jones and Vern Gosdin became a noticeable influence the young singer.

Owens' found his high school years split between sports and other activities, but after graduation in 1990, he found a guitar teacher, and put his focus back on music. The teacher, Shelly Commander, recognized Owens' talent and put him to work playing in Commander's band. The band line-up changed three of four times, but Owens always remained a member.

Shane entered, and won, the Jimmy Dean Country Showdown State Competition in Alabama two years in a row in 1995 and 1996 and made it as far as the national semi-finals. In 1996, Owens ventured out on his own, forming his own band and playing the Civic Center in Ozark, Alabama with Conferderate Rail Road.

Owens continues to perform nonstop. He has shared the stage with many of Country's top artists, including Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Merle Haggard and dozens of others, while touring all over the South. He has a new single heading toward radio, and it is in our spotlight today. Shane Owens and "Where I'm Coming From" is our Unsigned/Indy Artist Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
