Dierks Bentley, ‘Tip It on Back’ – Song Review

Tip it on Back
Capitol Nashville

Dierks Bentley has done something interesting with his new single ‘Tip It on Back’ from the ‘Home’ album. The singer marries the spirit of songs like ‘Free and Easy’ — and more recently, ‘Am I the Only One’ — with the sexy pace of his most famous ballads (think ‘Come a Little Closer’ and ‘Feel That Fire’).

And much like gin’s strange marriage to tonic or Kermit the Frog’s hard-t0-figure-out relationship with Miss Piggy, this coupling works. The result is the most chill three-and-a-half minutes of music on country radio right now. One almost wants to go catch a buzz to see if it sounds any better.

Tip it on back, make it feel good / Sip a little more than you know you should / Let the smoke roll off of your lips / Let it all go whatever it is / And tip it on back,” Bentley sings during the chorus. The song tries to be about pushing life’s troubles aside with a cold beer, but by the time he gets to the chorus, the first verse is mostly forgotten. Perhaps that’s the point.

I don’t wanna lose this feeling / And I don’t wanna close my eyes / And I don’t wanna remember what I’m here to forget tonight / So tip it on back / Just tip it on back,” the Arizona born singer adds during the bridge.

‘Tip It on Back’ is a great late summer groove to be used to peel back a layer of impenetrable heat from a dark summer night. Like so much of the music on ‘Home,’ the song feels loosely and spontaneously put together. It’s as if you’re in the singer’s basement watching him jam with a few friendly pickers. Thankfully, Bentley has turned that spirit into a nearly decade-long career.
