Oklahoma Pet Owners Should Throw These Products Out IMMEDIATELY

A recent recall in pet food is causing health officials to plead with pet owners to throw certain products away. Humans have been infected with salmonella after coming into contact with the pet food. Reported illnesses due to these recalled products have occurred in seven states, including Oklahoma.

Texas-based pet food manufacturer Mid America Pet Food recently recalled all the pet foods brands it manufactures, according to a report from the FDA. The products manufactured by Mid America Pet Food with a best by date before Oct. 31, 2024, include the brands Victor, Eagle Mountain, Wayne Feeds and two varieties of Member's Mark (Sam's Club) pet foods. These products include both dog and cat foods that were sold nationwide in stores and online.

Humans, mostly babies, have reported illnesses due to this recall.

According to the CDC, as of Nov. 1, seven people in seven different states have been infected with Salmonella from this recall. Six of the seven cases reported were in children ages one year or younger. One of these cases was reported in Oklahoma, other cases were reported in California, Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky and Minnesota. As of Nov. 13, no deaths have been reported.

This salmonella outbreak is linked to dry dog food.

On Nov. 9, the CDC released a breakdown of the outbreak and which foods pet owners need to dispose of as humans can easily be affected with salmonella from these products. According to the CDC, "People in this outbreak got sick from touching recalled dog food, touching things like dog bowls that contained the dog food, or touching the poop or saliva of dogs that were fed the dog food."
