Fall Break Staycation Ideas To OKC

As Lawton rolls through the rest of Fall Break from school, it's the perfect time to get out in the state and see something. Start with a quick day or two trip to OKC.

There is a ton of stuff to experience in our state's capital, most of which will likely be scarce with people.

One of the biggest draws to our state is the OKC National Memorial and Museum. It's the site of the largest and most heinous act of domestic terrorism in US history. Located where the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building once stood. This attack was in response to the ATF and FBI's complete and utter tyranny at Waco, TX two years earlier.

It made headlines across the country, but every kid in an Oklahoma school was allowed to watch the coverage from the moment it happened til the coverage went back to daytime TV. It was a huge thing in our state. That being said, even as we were glued to the TV for days, the OKC National Memorial and Museum holds secrets the news networks never conveyed to the public.

Last time I was there, it was closed for remodeling. Apparently, in that remodeling, they really stepped up the vision and storytelling acumen of their displays. Most people I know that have visited have spoken about how emotional a walk it is through the museum.

While you're there, experience a Fall overload at the Myriad Botanical Gardens.

The Myriad Botanical Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City is unique among others across the world as it is also a public park. It's free to walk around and experience the vast majority of it. However, that's not to say it's just a park, it also features the unique Crystal Bridge.

The Crystal Bridge is a greenhouse shaped like a tube. Oklahomans worked hard to get it built, and after thirty years of perfecting the space, it's ferociously cool these days. You start your journey through the tube in a rainforest and migrate to the desert by the time you get to the other side. Literally one of the coolest things in Oklahoma.

As a plus, this time of year the trees change colors and the season starts popping out of the ground. A must for fall foliage lovers.

If you've got the kids in tow with you, don't forget to go down into Bricktown. While Bass Pro is a cool place to spend a little time, there is so much more to that district.

Did you know there is a mini-golf course along the Bricktown canal nestled into a little fun zone of cool activities? Yeah, it's there on the West side of the Bricktown Ballpark. Well, not on the "West side" of the ballpark, but West of it for sure. You have to walk the paths in between the buildings to find it off the beaten path.

Pro-Tip - If you want to plan a weekend or overnight stay, look to the hotels on the Northern border of Bricktown. They're just as convenient to the experience, but half the price of the hotels right in the middle of everything. If you're taking a day trip, while the charged parking is convenient, it's free at Bass Pro if you're willing to walk or take a scooter.
