Flood Damage Impacts Visitation to Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
Portions of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge are currently closed to the public due to significant impacts from the recent tornado and flooding that occurred in this area.
To ensure public safety, the refuge will not be conducting any tours or programs and most trails and auto tour routes will remain closed until further notice. The visiting public is encouraged to stop by the Visitor Center (VC) for updated information on the areas that are accessible.
The VC is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Refuge staff and more than 20 personnel from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working to remove debris, repair damaged roads and facilities, and ensure public safety.
The public is encouraged to contact the refuge by phone (580-429-2197) or email (Quinton_Smith@fws.gov) before planning a visit. Information can also be found on the refuge website at http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Wichita_Mountains/.
