Farmer’s Almanac has put out its 2025-26 Winter Outlook. For those of us in Oklahoma, it might not be that bad.

This year’s forecast is a “wetter-than-average winter with periodic cold snaps,” including “several cold rain events and occasional freezing precipitation.” That being said, snow isn't expected.

This is a polar shift from the overall warm winter last year.

Cue the memories of Winter 2022 and 2023 in Oklahoma...

Those were blistering cold, deep snow, lingering ice everywhere we all went. Contrast that with forecasts now pointing toward moisture-heavy, soggy cold... Does that mean lots of slushy stuff?

The real question is, does a wetter winter equal more snow? Not typically.

Really, the Almanac is talking about lots of rain, occasionally freezing rain, and sleet when the temps dip near the freezing point.

The Almanac specifically says Oklahoma and its neighbors are due for “cold rain events” and only occasional freezing precipitation, meaning snow is predicted to be rather limited.

Oklahoma's grain farmers don't like to hear that. Snow provides deep moisture.

We've all, or at least most of us, had wet winters. Unless temperatures plunge suddenly and deeply, which they do across Oklahoma that time of year, much of that moisture will stay as rain, even when expectations lean toward snow.

How many snow days turned out to be nothingburgers over the years?

Here's the kicker: Should we all just trust this? The Farmer’s Almanac relies on 200-year-old astrological formulas that range from sunspots to lunar cycles, planetary alignments, and astrological signs. They claim up to 85% accuracy, but researching after the fact usually pegs Farmer's Almanac around a stout 50/50.

Nobody can tell you the future. Even the best meteorologists in the state give the most open-ended, generic forecasts and call it accuracy.

Here’s the takeaway. This coming winter, Oklahoma is shaping up to be cold and wet, not cold and snowy. That soggy cold will likely drag on with rain, occasional ice, and a few freezing snaps, but the powder days may be few and far between.

Best plan? Prepare for mud, drainage issues, and slick roads. There's always a chance for that once-a-year big surprise snowstorm... The Oklahoma winter loves its quirks.
