Looks like a Texas high school has voted to bring their old name back after it was 'cancelled' in 2020.

A lot of talk over the past month about bringing old team names back. For instance, President Trump wants to bring back the Washington Redskins team name. Which lead to some here locally wanting the Midwestern State Indians to come back. Well one school in Texas is not all talk and is actually changing their name back next school year.

Midland Legacy Will Be Changing Back to Midland Lee

Last night the Midland ISD school board officially voted to reverse the name change. Many outlets are reporting this is the first time in Texas that a school has reverted back to a name with confederate ties. The changes will not take effect until the 2026 school year.

Midland ISD School Board Member Began These Talks a Month Ago

Apparently over the summer District 7 Board Member Josh Guinn posted that he planned to have this name change at the August 12th meeting. It looks like the majority of the school board agreed with his idea, which you can read in full below.

Here in Midland, Texas, our traditions—forged by generations of hardworking Midlanders—are the bedrock of our community. These are not mere names; they are symbols of our shared pride, our unyielding commitment to unity, and our gratitude to the thousands who’ve funded this school to elevate education and strengthen our town. This is not about division—it’s about honoring the patriotic legacy that binds us. Let’s stand firm, protect our heritage, and ensure Midland Lee High School rises as a beacon of our West Texas spirit.

Why Did Midland Originally Change Their School Name?

Back in 2020, over 10,000 citizens in Midland, Texas signed a petition asking the school board to change the name of the school. Back then, the school board had an even higher majority of agreement, voting 6-1 to change the school from Midland Lee to Midland Legacy. Before 2020, Texas had 87 schools with Confederate name ties. Now a few of these names are not really fair in my opinion to add to this list. That would be John Tyler and Thomas Saltus Lubbock, which the towns themselves are named after as well.

Will this be the first of many schools to revert back to their old name? We will have to wait and see.
