Veteran singer-songwriter Kris Delmhorst is premiering her song “All the Way Around” exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to listen.

"All the Way Around" starts off plodding and somber, then transitions into a melodic chorus; toward the end, the guitar playing adds a sonic backbone to the song’s meaning. Lyrically, Delmhorst explores the concept of life as a constant search — for love, for inspiration and for one’s own identity.

“This song is a round-trip journey: losing the path, finding the path. Losing the way to your lover, to your muse, to your sense of self, and having to dead reckon the way back,” Delmhorst tells The Boot. “As far as I can tell, this process, repeated over and over again, is a large percentage of the business of being human.”

“All the Way Around” will appear on Delmhorst’s forthcoming album The Wild, her first release since 2014’s Blood Test. The project is due out on Sept. 22. To produce the album, Delmhorst enlisted the team behind her husband Jeffrey Foucault’s recent album, Salt as Wolves.

In addition to her solo work, Delmhorst used to perform alongside Foucault and singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey in a trio called Redbird; she has also contributed backing vocals and instrumentation to a number of albums, including recordings by artists such as Lori McKenna.
