Lawton Man Gets 10 Years for Robbing Bank with a Fake Bomb
A Lawton, OK. man was sentenced to 10 years, 120 months in federal prison for robbing a local bank using a fake bomb and detonator. Back on March 23rd, 2020 John Scott Brooks (39) robbed the Southwest Oklahoma Federal Credit Union located at 6714 West Gore Blvd. He pulled into the drive-thru of the bank and placed a fake bomb in the service tray or teller drawer along with a note that demanded money. He then showed the teller a detonator that had a timer that was counting down. The teller gave him the money and he drove off. Not too sure how much money was stolen, but he didn't get far before authorities caught up to him.
Despite attempting to cover his tracks by altering the appearance of his vehicle and himself along with trying to erase cell phone data and coming up with an elaborate cover story, law enforcement identified and arrested him quickly. LPD (Lawton Police Department) and the Oklahoma City field office of the FBI (Federal Bureau Investigation) worked together to bring him in and did an amazing job of capturing this criminal. He's certainly a candidate for the world's dumbest criminal. Honestly, it's the first time I've ever heard of someone trying to use a fake bomb to rob a bank, and in the drive-thru no less. This guy is a special type of stupid!
Needless to say, there was a ton of evidence and eyewitnesses that could identify him and his vehicle which made it rather easy to capture and eventually convict him of bank robbery. It only took the jury 2 hours to deliberate and find him guilty. The judge ended up sentencing him to 10 years in federal prison and 5 years supervised release/probation once he gets out of prison. I guess he also had a criminal history so this wasn't his first offense or scrape with the law. This career criminal has had his career cut short...
