400 area families will benefit from an initiative of the Soldier Family Council of the Association of the United States Army's Fires Chapter. A meeting this week served mainly as a planning session for an upcoming Feed the Children food distribution and a wrap-up of the Southwest Oklahoma Stand Down for homeless veterans that was conducted in Lawton on May 6.

Jervis Jackson, director of the Southwest Oklahoma Continuum of Care, stated that Feed the Children intends to bring down enough to feed 400 families at its "Summer Caravan." That includes a 25-pound box of non-perishable food items, a 10-pound box of household items and a five-pound box of Avon products for each family.

The giveaway will take place in the parking lot adjacent to the Cameron University football stadium; with trucks arriving between 1:30-2 p.m. on July 12th, with volunteers from 75th Field Artillery Brigade unloading the supplies. The unloading will begin around 4:30 p.m. following opening ceremonies. Jackson said recipients of food will have to pre-register. Registrants will be issued time-stamped vouchers which are staggered so that the crowd doesn't all come at once. Vouchers are redeemable for food and sundries, and are available through the Lawton Housing Authority, located at 609 SW F Street.

Jackson said the only things he needs now are tents and canopies and water bottles.
