No Dry County Bring Surrealistic Quality to ‘Elvis Gun Runner’ [Exclusive Premiere]
Nobody can accuse No Dry County of being derivative with their new song, "Elvis Gun Runner." In fact, it's almost certainly the only song of its kind you'll hear this year .... or possibly, ever.
The song's unusual premise and lyrics were inspired in a manner that was just as unique as the track itself.
"'Elvis' is the first song I've ever woken from a dream and written immediately," NDP singer, songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist Trent Langford says. "In said dream, Amarillo storyteller Heath Tolleson describes the adventures of Lubbock songwriter Danny Cadra, in which he works as a runner for an arms trafficking outfit funded by Elvis Presley. The most outrageous part of the process is that the music was written in the dream as well, as if I was watching a trailer for a movie (including an ode to Wilson Pickett during the instrumental). I woke up at 4AM, wrote it all down and went back to bed slightly disturbed and distressed at what might be waiting for me in my next slumber."
Langford joined with Matt Newsom (drums/vocals), Dub Wood (bass/vocals) and Bristen Phillips (guitars/keys) in 2009, initially forming an '80s cover band. They fused collective influences that include Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Hayes Carll, rock, metal, blues and country to create their own unique sound, releasing their debut EP, Ella Rose, in 2011. They followed that with their sophomore EP, To Whom It May Concern, in 2012 and released their full-length debut, The Night Before, in 2015.
Based in Lubbock, Texas, NDC's unique mix of heartland classic rock, Americana, folk and other influences has drawn praise from Diffuser, Baeble, PopMatters, Glide magazine and more. They keep a busy schedule of more than 100 gigs per year, and No Dry County are set to release their new full-length project, Panhandle Music, on June 29. "Elvis Gun Runner" is just one of the tracks on the new album, and it's debuting exclusively with Taste of Country below.
