Oklahoma Health Experts Worried About COVID-19 Delta Variant

Over the past couple of days and weeks Oklahoma has seen a sharp increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. From what's been reported it's around a 90% increase when compared to previous weeks. It's suspected that around 190 plus cases are being reported per day. This has state healthcare experts concerned as the number of new cases continues to rise and the threat of the Delta Variant is looming. There are several confirmed cases of the Delta Variant in Oklahoma already.

The latest data places Oklahoma as second in the entire Nation for the number of new COVID-19 cases being reported per day/week. Experts agree that the neighboring states have created an issue with our state's recent growth in positive cases. What's worse is that Arkansas and Missouri are ranked #1 and #2 for the Delta Variant of COVID-19. At this time there's no confirmed or clear data from Texas or Kansas as far as the Delta Variant infection rates. Oklahoma Healthcare experts and the medical community have stated that the Delta Variant seems to be the most prevalent COVID-19 variant in the state at this time.

The Delta Variant of COVID-19 is stronger and more easily spread. From what's been reported the Delta Variant is anywhere from 50% to 60% more contagious and transmissible than the original virus. Even worse, this variant has a far higher hospitalization rate and the people it infects have far worse symptoms. The good news is the COVID-19 vaccinations appear to be effective against the variant and those who are vaccinated are more likely to not catch it, or have much milder symptoms if they do.

Roughly half the state remains nu-vaccinated. Oklahoma has around 45% of it's overall population fully vaccinated and close to`10% who have had at least one shot, but are still in need of the second. If you haven't been fully vaccinated yet you can contact the Comanche County Health Department to schedule an appointment or locate the next mobile clinic or walk in dates.
