One of the peculiar things about the current slate of superhero movies it how thoroughly they nail the big moments and sometimes slip on the small ones. Take Iron Man, for example. The films have routinely nailed Tony Stark’s arrogance and desire to protect the world from all threats foreign and domestic, but some of the underlying reasoning behind that drive —  Stark’s history as an alcoholic and addict  —  have routinely been shoved to the background of the movies. The same could be said of Spider-Man. While the last five films have given us epic moments of slingin’ webs, they’ve often lost the high-school camaraderie that explains so much of Peter Parker’s superhero worldview.

Ever since Daredevil paved the way for a new wave of Marvel television shows, fans have been waiting for the day that the studio would throw all its beloved superheroes into one giant pot. Spider-Man fighting alongside Daredevil; Jessica Jones and Gamora arguing over which one of them has more anger issues; Black Panther beating the ever-loving crap out of Iron Fist just because. Unfortunately for us, Marvel has maintained a strict separation between its television and movie properties, always suggesting that the legal and logistical requirements of bringing everyone together would require a (sorry) superhuman effort on the part of the studio

Months ahead of its premiere, Marvel’s Netflix Defenders are fully assembled with a proper trailer, teasing some Elektra-fying threats and crossovers for the street-level heroes. We couldn’t help diving way deeper into every frame of footage, to find every secret in anticipation of The Defenders hitting the streets this summer.

This is all James Gunn’s fault. The writer/director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise left so many plot threads dangling in the first movie. Who was Peter Quill’s dad? What was the deal with Yondu? What was Thanos up to next? Would any other Guardians from the original Marvel comics show up? I mean, what did he expect the internet to do? Not spend the next three years speculating wildly (and mostly inaccurately) about his plans? Yeah no.

Just yesterday, Marvel seemed to hint at a need for Defenders against a resurrected threat, and now we know why. The war for New York is officially on, as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist unite in the first full Defenders trailer!

Even though he should have been hard at work on The Winds of Winter, George R. R. Martin took some time out of his week to appear on History Channel’s new documentary series Superheroes Decoded, all about how today’s culture became so dominated by the creations of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and the like. Martin shared a fan letter he wrote to Marvel Comics, praising one of the issues of Fantastic Four, and the entire magazine.

The first press screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took place in New York and Los Angeles last night. Full reviews are embargoed until next week, but members of he media were allowed to tweet their reactions, so we’ve got a slew of mini-reviews to share today.

Ever since he signed on to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the biggest question James Gunn has faced — aside from the usual inquiries about Star-Lord’s dad and what’s up with the villain — is whether he’d return for Vol. 3. His answer, consistently: He just doesn’t know. That changed this afternoon, as Gunn himself made an official announcement on his Facebook page — no need to play coy about this one since you already read the headline.
