‘Twisters’ Cast Talks About Shooting Crazy Tornado Scenes in Oklahoma
We're a little over a month away until "Twisters" strikes movie theaters. The cast recently sat down with Fandango and talked about filming crazy tornado scenes in Oklahoma.
"Twisters" will hit theaters July 19, and it has already been confirmed that film will not be a prequel or a sequel to the 1996 classic "Twister." It's been stated by the cast previously that "Twisters" is its own story, a stand-alone film. The cast talked more in depth about this and about shooting in Oklahoma in a recent interview with Fandango.

What did the cast like about 'Twister' from 1996?
When asked about what they remembered most from 1996 "Twister," the cast laughed about the cow from an iconic scene where characters played by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are driving through two tornadoes and a cow circles their truck. Paxton's fiancée is on the phone and says, "Julia, I'll call you back. We've got cows."
Cast was trained by real-life storm chasers.
While filming in Oklahoma, the cast visited the National Weather Service in Norman and learned about weather patterns and what the meteorologists do when severe weather is imminent. They also trained with actual storm chasers to get a first-hand account for what it's like to actually be in the middle of a tornado.
The cast confirmed that the storm chasers they worked with are actually in "Twisters," along with their storm chasing vehicles. Which means the cast had real storm chasers available on site for insight during shooting.
"They're not extras," Powell said. "They're the real deal."
Is 'Twisters' connected to 'Twister' at all?
Although "Twisters" is not a direct prequal or sequel to "Twister," there are certain nods to the original film that fans will recognize. Plus, the cast confirmed that there has been a dedicated team behind "Twisters," specifically Steven Spielberg who produced the 1996 film, to bring audience back to that world in a new way.
"On the whole, we have a story that stands alone in a really great way," Powell said. "You don't even need to revisit the original, but you can if you want - there will be more easter eggs that way. But I think this movie stands on its own with new characters, new cast and new effects. We've brought this [story] into the present in a great way."
How were the tornado scenes brought to life?
In the original film, a lot of what you see the characters go through are real, in a sense. Like when Paxton was in the truck getting pounded by hail, they were actually driving the truck and ahead of them was another truck with a huge fan and people behind the scenes were throwing ice and branches at Paxton.
That was in 1996, and movie magic has greatly increased over the last two decades. Of course, the special effects will be more intense compared to the first film. The director has also stated previously that some of the tornado footage was actual footage taken by storm chasers in Oklahoma. And in their recent interview, the cast confirmed that they had very physical filming days for "Twisters," similar to how scenes were filmed in 1996.
