One of the biggest problems (and one that we’ve covered quite a bit) with Warner Bros’ DCEU is the way the studio is reverse-engineering its Justice League franchise. Instead of establishing their characters in individual films and slowly building toward a big crossover, they’ve done the reverse. And by building their productions around meeting a release date deadline, they wind up with films that are kind of a mess. If Ben Affleck’s approach to his Batman standalone film (and the recent decision to delay Justice League 2) is any indication, then maybe — just maybe — WB is learning from their mistakes.

Now that Gotham has officially signed off for 2016 with midseason finale “Beware the Green-Eyed Monster,” it might take a green-haired one to bring fans back in January. So it is, that the first 2017 trailer for Gotham Season 3 teases Cameron Monaghan’s return as the Joker-esque “Jerome.”

A bonafide TV Batman may have become the holy grail for DC fans, between the Arrow-verse tiptoeing around direct reference to the Dark Knight, or Gotham languishing in its inability to wait for Bruce Wayne’s future. Between the epic run of Game of Thrones and the impressive first season of Westworld, odds are good that you’re currently rocking an annual subscription to HBO or HBOGo. Few networks are still in the business of appointment television, but with social media sites like Twitter exploding into a flurry of spoilers after each new episode of both shows, fans are finding that their only real options are to watch on time or to not watch at all. Not that Gotham has ever stood as a pillar of comic adaptations, but executive producer Bruno Heller made some surprising comments in recent weeks, to suggest “I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV” overall. Now, producers attempt to clarify the remarks, saying “some things are better executed in film and some things are better executed in TV.”

One of the hot rumors surrounding Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman movie was that it would serve as a kind of loose adaptation of Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, a haunting graphic novel that features Batman breaking up a riot at Gotham’s notorious insane asylum. Morrison’s comic is a darkly beautiful addition to the Batman mythology and seems to be perfectly in line with the kind of superhero stories Warner Bros. is looking for: for mature audiences and crammed to the gills with as many recognizable faces as possible.

FOX’s Gotham has never exactly been the paragon of patience, waiting all of 15 episodes before introducing a proto-Joker to its young Bruce Wayne. The same holds true of Season 3, as even death won’t keep Cameron Monaghan’s “Jerome” from confirming a return appearance.
