It's bitterly cold in Oklahoma this January, and one town broke the record for coldest recorded temperature on Jan. 21. On Tuesday morning, Beaver, Oklahoma, recorded negative 17 degrees.

Most of Oklahoma experienced frigid temperatures on Tuesday morning. Most were in the single digits, but a few places up north and in panhandle recorded temperatures below zero. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, Tuesday morning's temperatures were the coldest they have been all winter. And the last time it was this cold in Oklahoma was during the historic winter storm of February 2021.

Beaver, Oklahoma was the coldest place in the state Tuesday morning.

But the coldest place in the state Tuesday morning was up in the Oklahoma panhandle in Beaver. At negative 17 degrees Tuesday morning, Beaver set an Oklahoma record for the coldest temperatures on Jan. 21 since the 1880s.

According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, it's also the coldest temperature recorded in the state since the town of Nowata hit negative 22 degrees on Feb. 16, 2021. And for the state as a whole, the statewide average this morning was negative 6.7 degrees which is the coldest morning the state has had since Feb. 16, 2021, when the statewide average was negative 12.4 degrees.

Oklahoma will get above freezing before next weather event.

Oklahoma's temperatures will jump up to above freezing in some places on Tuesday. After that, Oklahoma temperatures as a whole will be on a steady increase above average through Friday, Jan. 24 before the state's next winter weather event. As we get into the weekend, temperatures will begin trending down again.
