Today the focus centers on a group formed in Nashville, that just a year ago had only recently released their debut single. They were hoping for enough attention from the song that it would lead to the release of a debut album.

Singer Michael Hobby, guitarists Bill Satcher and Zach Brown and bassist Graham DeLoach came out of the shoot with a thundering sound that evoked memories of classic 70's and 80's southern rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet. But it had been a long path to success for A Thousand Horses.

Sachter and Hobby grew up together in Newburry, South Carolina, and began writing songs together at age 15. Every summer, Sachter's cousin, DeLoach would visit during the school break and the trio would perform along with bass player Jimmy Street, a session player from Nashville. After Street left the group, some mutual friends introduced the remaining trio to Zach Brown, and A Thousand Horses was born.

The band's name came from a song on their debut EP, released in 2010 on DCG/Interscope Records. While the EP did not yield any successful singles, it did feature the song "Suicide Eyes" which was featured in the 2011 remake of Footloose, which starred Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald. The group began to gain national attention in 2014, when, prior to an appearance at the Austin City Limits Festival, Rolling Stone magazine praised their energy, stage presence and live performance.

After that appearance, the band was signed by Republic Records Nashville, and immediate went into the studio to begin work on their first full-length album, Southernality. In advance of the albums release in June of 2015, their debut single "Smoke" was released, almost unceremoniously. Their sound, as well as their look on the song's video, drew immediate comparisons to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The song slowly made it's way up the Billboard Country Airplay chart. When the song hit the number one spot on the chart, it made A Thousand Horses the first Country band since the Zac Brown Band ("Chicken Fried") in 2008 to hit number one with their debut single. The second single from the album, "(This Ain't No) Drunk Dial" peaked at #23 on the charts.

Today we spotlight the third single from Southernality. A Thousand Horses and "First Time" is today's Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
