The Mavericks came up in the late 80s, finding their way in the Miami music scene that was mostly dominated by punk and alternative music. Originally a quartet composed of lead singer Raul Malo, guitarist Ben Peeler, drummer Paul Deakin and bass player Robert Reynolds, the group released their self-titled debut album independently in 1989. Before the album's release, David Lee Holt replaced Peeler on lead guitar; Holt appears on the album's cover.

The group signed with MCA Nashville in 1991, releasing their major label debut, From Hell To Paradise, in 1992. Holt would leave the group after the album's release, replaced by various session players for both live shows and on the group's third album. Nick Kane, who was one of the session players used for the album, What A Crying Shame, would replace Holt officially after the album's release, though he was credited on the album cover.

The group would release 4 albums with MCA Nashville before leaving the label in 1999. They would resurface in 2003, releasing another self-titled album on indy label Sanctuary Records. The group added guitarist Eddie Perez to replace Kane for this album and tour, but broke up in 2004 shortly after the tour concluded.

Lead singer Malo would release 6 solo albums during the groups first hiatus and after the split, but in 2011, the Mavericks announced a limited reunion tour. The last lineup returned for the reunion, adding keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden as an official member; McFadden had been an unofficial member for several years. In 2012, the group signed with the Valory Music group, a division of Big Machine Records, and has released 3 albums with the label, including their most recent, Brand New Day, which was released in May.
